Floor Care Procedures

Your floor has been refinished with with two coats of Bona Woodline oil based or water based finish. Both are a very durable, moisture-resistant surface finish.

CURING: The curing process takes approximately 3 - 14 days depending on if you have an oil or water finish. . The floor may be walked on, and furniture replaced after 24 hours, but the floor is susceptible to scuffing or marring prior to completion of the curing time. Do not replace walk-off mats or throw rugs until finish is fully cured. Do not drag or slide furniture. Do not clean with water or detergent during the curing process. Use only a dry cloth for cleaning during the first two weeks.

Bona recommends using their Bona care cleaning systems which can be purchased at Home Depot or Menards, and generally consists of a microfiber cloth and wood safe spray cleaners. Additionally, the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) recommends the following care tips to care for your floor.

  • Do not use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors. Self-polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly.

  • Use throw rugs both inside and outside doorways to help prevent grit, dirt and other debris from being tracked onto your wood floors. This will prevent scratching. Sunlight will affect the color of water & oil finishes. Throw rugs can be moved occasionally to help reduce shadowing.

  • Do not wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue.

  • Wipe up spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel.

  • Put soft plastic or fabric-faced glides, or felt pads under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching.

  • Avoid walking on your wood floors with cleats, sports shoes and high heels. A 125-pound person walking in high heels has an impact of 2,000 pounds per square inch. An exposed heel nail can exert up to 8,000 pounds per square inch. This kind of impact can dent any floor surface.

  • When moving heavy furniture, do not slide it on wood flooring. It is best to pick up the furniture completely to prevent scratches.

  • For wood flooring in the kitchen, place an area rug in front of the kitchen sink.

  • Avoid taping (even blue tape) directly to the floor. It can pull the finish when removed.

  • Use a humidifier throughout the winter months to minimize gaps or cracks.
